Business, labor groups pull four measures from ballot

Published October 2, 2008 by CSBJ Staff

Business and labor groups have reached a deal to withdraw four statewide November ballot measures that business leaders said would have driven jobs out of state.

The announcement was made today, hours away fro the 5 p.m. deadline for removing ballot initiatives.

Union groups agreed to pull the four proposals under the condition that business leaders agree to help pay for a campaign to oppose Amendments 54, 49 and 47, the so-called right-to-work ballot measure.

Amendment 49 would prohibit the state’s public employers from using payroll deductions to benefit private organizations. Amendment 54 would close a loophole in state election law by banning the practice of “pay to play.”

The four withdrawn measures are:

Amendment 53, which would make executive wrongdoing a crime under state law

Amendment 55, which would require employers to show cause for firing a worker

Amendment 56, which would require state employers to provide health insurance for workers

Amendment 57, which would let workers sue their employers in workers-compensation cases
