Staples earnings per share plummet 15 percent

Americans are eating out less, purchasing less clothing and, apparently, fewer office supplies, too.

Staples Inc. representative said the office supply company’s second-quarter results would be weaker than anticipated because American consumers have pulled back on spending.

The Framingham, Mass.-based office supply company said revenue rose about 3 percent and earnings per share fell about 15 during the quarter, compared to a year ago.
