Population growing, aging faster than expected

Census Bureau projections released this week show that the population of the United States is growing much faster than forecast.
By 2030, nearly one in five residents will be at least 65, including all of the baby boomers. By 2050, the population of Americans in the “working ages” of 18 to 64 is expected to decline to 57 percent from its current level of 63 percent.
These changes will have profound implications for the nation’s labor force, said John Challenger, chief executive officer for Challenger, Gray and Christmas.
“Employers face potential skilled-worker shortages as older employers leave the work force and fewer younger workers are available to fill the void,” he said, adding that some companies may continue to depend on older employees who work well into their 70s.
