Art on the Streets hits the streets

It’s time once again for fresh art on the streets.

Thirteen pieces interpreting the theme “City of Sunshine,” which was an historical tag line for the city during its first half-century, will be unveiled at an invitation-only 10th Anniversary Art on the Streets reception June 20 at the Pikes Peak Center for Performing Arts.

Selected pieces include a solar-powered bench of recycled materials that lights up at night, a shimmering miasma of glass prisms and stainless steel aircraft cables configuring a “stairway to heaven,” and a Lego-like whimsical buck and doe heading into downtown.

Since the program’s inception, 15 pieces of artwork valued at nearly $220,000 have been purchased for permanent display downtown. More than 100 artists have presented 164 works of art during the first 10 years of Art on the Streets. All of the artwork in each annual exhibit is for sale.

Selections for this year’s Art on the Streets exhibit have been created by artists from Colorado, Wisconsin and California. A walking tour map and assemblage of artists’ statements will be released at the opening and later available online at www.downtown80903.com.

Art on the Streets is a yearlong outdoor art exhibit founded by US Bank, supported by Nor’wood Development and GE Johnson, and facilitated by the Downtown Partnership affiliate group, Community Ventures.
