Denied: city planning blocks downtown bar plan

A plan to add another bar downtown has failed.

A plan to turn the former Acme Ticket company building into a bar has failed.
Rodney and Marie Beers, former owners of the Eden nightclub at 217 E. Pikes Peak Ave., purchased the former Acme Ticket company building at 14 E. Kiowa St. with plans to turn it into a bar.
But, the building is within 200 feet of the Daniels Lofts, which are across the alley at 108 N. Tejon St. – and city code doesn’t allow liquor to be sold within 200 feet of a residence.
The Beers’, doing business under the name All Flash and No Cash Inc., applied for a variance to the code, but the city Planning Department denied the request, said permit coordinator Sue Motz.
Downtown Partnership Executive Director Beth Kosely said her organization and the police department were opposed to the variance request.
Motz said the Beers’ have the opportunity to appeal the decision, but Rodney Beers would not say what he and his wife will do.
“I don’t have to talk about that,” he said.
The Acme building has a “for sale or rent” sign posted.
