The Downtown Development Authority has awarded $310,000 in matching grants to organizations that have plans to give downtown a facelift.

The grants were awarded to 18 individuals, businesses and organizations that have redevelopment and urban renewal plans that include upgrades and expansions for the retail stores Sparrow Hawk and Regina’s Unique Boutique, landscaping for the Penrose Library, upgrades to the Cottonwood Artists’ School and a street car feasibility study.

Award winners are required to match the grant money dollar for dollar. Grants range from $3,000 to $40,000.

The DDA received 52 applications for grants.

“The purpose of the program was to support more happening in downtown, to see if our funds would spur some new thinking and new projects,” said Nolan Schriner, Downtown Development Authority board chairman. “We were overwhelmed by the creativity, thought and quality of the proposed projects.”

The DDA is in its first year of funding. Voters approved the district’s five-mill levy in 2006.
