Springs jobless rate higher than national average

The labor department reported today that the nation’s unemployment rate dropped to 5 percent during April while a Colorado Springs unemployment survey from March puts the city’s jobless rate at 5.6 percent.
Nationally, April job losses totaled 20,000, an improvement from the 81,000 reductions in payrolls logged during March.
But, whether the Springs could see a similar reduction during April won’t be known until the April job report comes out after the middle of May.
The latest snapshot of the nationwide employment conditions was better than many economists were anticipating. They were bracing for job cuts of 75,000 and for the unemployment rate to climb to 5.2 percent.
