Plan to add I-70 toll dies

Headed to Vail or Copper Mountain for a Memorial Day getaway? You won’t have to worry about paying a $5 toll on Interstate 70 this year, but you may have to sit in traffic for a few hours.

Colorado Senate Minority Leader Andy McElhany has asked fellow lawmakers to kill Senate Bill 213, which would have instituted a $5 toll on Interstate 70.

The controversial measure was opposed by residents of many of the state’s mountain communities.

McElhany, R-Colorado Springs, said he had expected to get more support from people outside the mountain corridor who were tired of backups on the state’s main east-west interstate highway.

In response to organized opposition, led by Sen. Dan Gibb, D-Silverthorne, McElhany has asked the Legislature to postpone a vote on the measure until May 26, after its session ends.
