Fire officials say the Ordway wildfire is about 95 percent contained and the fire on Fort Carson Army Base is about 10 percent contained.

Aircraft are still restricted from flying within five miles of the fire, and Highway 115 remains closed at mile 39, officials said.

Two Colorado Springs Fire Department chiefs and five trucks have been dispatched to help fight the fires.

Three people have been killed fighting the fires, two firefighters and a pilot that was a contractor for the Colorado Forest Service.

Pilot Gert Marais, of Fort Benton, Mont., died after his single-engine air tanker crashed last night. The cause of the accident is under investigation.

Olney Springs Fire Chief Terry DeVore and volunteer firefighter, John Schwartz were killed trying to cross a drainage ditch bridge about a mile west of Ordway,

There are no evacuation orders for the Fort Carson housing area, but evacuation centers have been set up on and off Fort Carson in case of such an order.

The primary evacuation re-location center is the Special Events Center on Fort Carson, (enter through Gate 5). The other is Garcia Gym (enter through Gate 1).

Off-post shelter will be available at Pikes Peak Community College.

Residents can call 211, the United Way’s assistance line, for evacuation information. As of 9 a.m. today 175 people had called the line with questions.

The United Way is soliciting cash donations to aid fire victims. Officials urge donors to give only to reputable organizations such as the United Way or Red Cross.
