The El Paso County Board of Commissioners this week approved a six-acre site in an industrial zone for a new Care and Share Food Bank facility.
It will be located on Constitution Avenue, one half mile southeast the Powers Boulevard intersection.
Care and Share plans to build a new office and warehouse with an increased number of loading docks. The building will serve as a distribution center through which non-perishable and refrigerated foods are unloaded, repackaged and shipped to locations throughout southern Colorado.
As a regional distribution hub for local partner agencies, Care and Share, provided more than 10.9 million pounds of food for 95,000 residents in 2007. At least 160,000 individuals in its service area have been identified as in need of assistance by the United States Department of Agriculture. The new food bank is designed to address the growing gap between current capacity and actual need.
