The U.S. Census Bureau will open a regional management center in Lakewood for the 2010 census.
The temporary center, at 6750 W. Jefferson Ave., will be one of several bases of operation around the country.
The office will run field census operations in Colorado as well as Arizona, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North and South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming.
As many as 250 employees will work out of the center by 2010. The Bureau has taken the count every 10 years since 1790 as required by the U.S. Constitution.
