DHS building to get upgrades

The El Paso County Department of Human Services building will undergo renovations this spring.

The Board of Commissioners approved a plan yesterday to renovate public waiting areas of the building at 105 N. Spruce St. that serves up to 500 people a day.

Commissioners Sallie Clark and Amy Lathen said they had received numerous complaints about overcrowded and poor conditions at the waiting area.

County officials did not specify how much the renovations might cost but said the money will come from state and federal funding, as well as from the department’s budget. El Paso County has contracted with MHB Construction, LLC to perform the work.

“This is an important improvement to this building which serves up to 10,000 citizens per month,” said Commissioner Sallie Clark, who serves as the liaison to the Department of Human Services. “Capacity, design, safety and privacy are paramount to operating these services effectively and efficiently.”
