Health care reform study: streamline to save $170 million

The latest analysis released by the Blue Ribbon Commission for Health Care Reform shows that streamlining administrative procedures could save the state nearly $170 million.
The commission identified strategies for simplifying the administrative process:
- require all health plans to issue ID cards that conform to nationally accepted standards
- streamline the provider credentialing process
- simplify eligibility and coverage verification
- standardize prior authorization procedures
- create standard approach to appeals for all carriers
Estimated savings for hospitals is $48.5 million and for doctors is $118.7 million, according to the Lewin Group.
