Deep-fried turkey do’s and don’ts

Planning to deep fry that bird this Thanksgiving?

American Medical Response, the folks who deal with frying attempts gone bad, have some common sense safety tips to offer.

  • Do keep children and pets away from the fryer.
  • Do thaw your turkey before frying it. Water in an unthawed turkey can cause the oil to spill over, leading to a threat of explosion. The National Turkey Foundation recommends thawing the bird 24 hours for each five pounds.
  • Do make sure the oil is completely cooled before removing it from the fryer.
  • Do use a fire extinguisher and not water to put out an oil fire.
  • Don’t leave turkey fryers unattended. Oil will continue to heat until it ignites.
  • Don’t overfill the fryer.
  • Don’t move the fryer once it is in operation.
  • Don’t use turkey fryers inside a house, on wooden decks or in a garage.
  • Don’t consume alcohol when working with a turkey fryer.

    Should it be so hard? How about just DON’T EAT TURKEY for THANKSGIVING? And if you can’t drink while cooking, what’s the point?
