Chipotle drops hormone from menu

Denver-based restaurant chain Chipotle Mexican Grill said this week that it will drop items from its menu containing the growth hormone rBGH by year’s end.

The hormone is used to stimulate milk production in dairy cattle.

Chipotle began serving sour cream free of the growth hormone last year. Over the past few months, the company has been moving toward using cheese that doesn’t contain rBGH. Some of the company’s locations also serve organic, rBGH-free milk.

The Food and Drug Administration approved rBGH in 1993, but a number of other countries, including Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Japan, have banned its use.
