Prairie dogs plague positive

Prairie dogs in southeast Colorado Springs have tested positive for plague.
The El Paso County Department of Health and Environment collected plague-positive fleas from prairie dogs near Fontaine Boulevard and Goldfield Drive, south of the Colorado Springs Municipal Airport.
Plague is a bacterial disease of rodents transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected flea. Symptoms of the plague are high fever, chills, headache, fatigue and tender lymph glands. The last human case in El Paso County occurred in 1991.
If you find a dead prairie dog in that area, call the Health Department at (719) 575-8635.
