Pricey payout

Published July 16, 2007 by Mike Boyd

The Church of Rome’s Los Angeles Archdiocese agreed to a $660 million mega-bucks payout over the weekend to settle more than 500 cases of alleged clergy abuse.
From a business model perspective, this can’t be good. I’d always thought that organized religion, and the Catholic Church in particular, had done a remarkable job through the years based solely on keen “business” decisions, i.e., selling a product that people want, changing when necessary to meet customer demand, branching out into new markets and new locations.
But will the business of religion ever be the same again? Several Catholic Archdiocese have filed bankruptcy and big settlements can’t be good for the long-term bottom line.
It should be interesting to see what steps the church takes next to right itself and its coffers.
